How to go to Mount Goryu 五竜岳
You can access Mount Goryu 五竜岳 from the bus station at Hakuba Goryu Escal Plaza 白馬五竜エスカルプラザ, or from Happo Gondola Station 八方ゴンドラリフト by passing through Mount Karamatsu 唐松岳. You can get to these 2 starting points via direct buses.

Hiking Trails to Mount Goryu 五竜岳
There are 2 main trails to hike up Mount Goryu 五竜岳.
Mount Goryu 五竜岳 is close to many other amazing mountains like Mount Shirouma 白馬岳 and Mount Kashimayari 鹿島槍ヶ岳. If you are planning to hike up Mount Goryu 五竜岳, it might be worth the time and effort to head to Mount Shirouma 白馬岳 and Mount Kashimayari 鹿島槍ヶ岳 and see what they have to offer.
If you have the stamina, you can take on the Ushiro Tateyama Trail 後立山連峰縦走ルート and pay a visit to another, or even both, of these other magnificent Japan's 100 famous mountains.
Danger!
Be warned that these routes are considered extremely dangerous and not recommended for beginner climbers.
The route northwards from Mount Goryu 五竜岳 to Mount Shirouma 白馬岳 will take you through the Kaerazu Kiretto 不帰キレット, ominously known as the 'No Return Ridge'.
The route southwards from Mount Goryu 五竜岳 to Mount Kashimayari 鹿島槍ヶ岳 brings you to the formidable Hachimine Kiretto 八峰キレット.
These are 2 of the 3 largest “knife-edge ridges” or “arêtes” (切戸 / キレット) in Japan.
Fun fact: the other arête is Daikiretto 大切戸 / 大キレット, situated in the Japan Northern Alps in between 2 of Japan's 100 famous mountain peaks, Mount Yari 槍ヶ岳 and Mount Hotaka 穂高岳.
There is 2 ways to get to Mount Goryu 五竜岳.
- Via Happo Gondola Station 八方ゴンドラリフト
- Via Hakuba Goryu Escal Plaza 白馬五竜エスカルプラザ
Which place to alight depends on which hiking trail you plan to take.
The other way to get to Mount Goryu 五竜岳 is via the Goryu Karamatsu Trail 五竜唐松縦走コース that starts from Happo Gondola Station 八方ゴンドラリフト.
The Happo Gondola Station 八方ゴンドラリフト forms the base station of the whole Happo Alpen Line, a series of 3 ropeways connecting Happo Gondola Station 八方ゴンドラリフト at the base and Grat Quad Lift Summit Station グラートクワッドリフト 頂上駅 at the top.
The starting point of the Goryu Karamatsu Trail 五竜唐松縦走コース we have noted in our article above is from Grat Quad Lift Summit Station グラートクワッドリフト 頂上駅.
The Happo Gondola Station 八方ゴンドラリフト is entry point into the whole area of the Hakuba Happo-One Snow Resort 白馬八方尾根スキー場, and can be reached by a 15 minutes walk from the Hakuba Happo Bus Terminal 白馬八方バスターミナル.

From Hakuba Goryu Escal Plaza 白馬五竜エスカルプラザ, one can ascend Mount Goryu 五竜岳 via the Goryu Toomi Ridge Trail 五竜岳遠見尾根コース.
To get to Hakuba Goryu Escal Plaza 白馬五竜エスカルプラザ, you can get to Hakuba Goryu Bus Stop 白馬五竜バス停 first then take the shuttle bus. Alternatively, you can walk from Kamishiro Station 神城駅 if you have difficulty meeting the bus schedule.
You can get to Hakuba Goryu Bus Stop 白馬五竜バス停 by 2 ways.
The first way is from Kamishiro Station 神城駅 is easily accessible by taking the JR trains.
From there, you can take the ropeway up to Alps Daira Station アルプス平駅, the trailhead of Goryu Toomi Ridge Trail 五竜岳遠見尾根コース.
It departs from Kamishiro Station 神城駅, and makes the only stop along the way at Hakuba Goryu Bus Stop 白馬五竜バス停, before heading to Hakuba Goryu Escal Plaza 白馬五竜エスカルプラザ.

Board the buses at Hakuba Goryu Bus Stop 白馬五竜バス停 to get back to Shinjuku 新宿 or Nagano City 長野市.
First, take the Free Shuttle Bus at Kamishiro Station (Descend) 神城駅発無料シャトルバス (下り) and alight at Hakuba Goryu Bus Stop 白馬五竜バス停. This bus will eventually arrive at Kamishiro Station 神城駅 as mentioned above.
