How to go to Mount Myoko 妙高山
You can ascend Mount Myoko 妙高山 typically from Tsubame Onsen Bus Stop 燕温泉バス停 or Akakura 赤倉 from the Myoko Sky Cable Bus Stop 妙高スカイケーブルバス停. Another, albeit challenging, option is to take on the Seki Trail 関コース that starts from Seki Onsen Bus Stop 関温泉バス停. We strongly recommend to also pay a visit the Mount Hiuchi 火打山, another member of the 100 Japanese famous mountains, that is nearby Mount Myoko 妙高山.

Hiking Trails to Mount Myoko 妙高山
There are 4 main trails we would recommend to hike up Mount Myoko 妙高山.
- Akakura Trail 赤倉コース
- Tsubame Trail 燕コース
- Myoko Hiuchi Trail 妙高火打コース
- Seki Trail 関コース (difficult route)
Based on the trails that you want to embark on, the starting points differ.
We start with the easiest route via the Myoko Kogen Sky Cable 妙高高原スカイケーブル that will take you to an elevation of 4,265 feet / 1,300m, then take a look at the alternatives via Tsubame Onsen 燕温泉 and Seki Onsen 関温泉, the latter of which we do not recommend 🙅♀️.
There are multiple ways to get to Myoko Kogen Sky Cable 妙高高原スカイケーブル. We start with the most popular method, via the Akakura Line 赤倉線.
You can take the Akakura Line 赤倉線 from Myokokogen Station 妙高高原駅 that will bring you to the doorstep of Myoko Kogen Sky Cable 妙高高原スカイケーブル.
This is the most common way to get to Myoko Kogen Sky Cable 妙高高原スカイケーブル due to the accessibility, the popularity, and thus the logistical advantage in infrastructure and facilities near Myokokogen Station 妙高高原駅 compared to the alternative.
The Akakura Line 赤倉線 operates from Apr 01, 2024 (Mon) to Nov 30, 2024 (Sat).

Second, you can start from Sekiyama Station 関山駅. Unfortunately, this will not bring you to the Myokokogen Sky Cable Base Station 妙高高原スカイケーブル駅.
You will need to alight at Shin-Akakura Intersection Bus Stop 新赤倉三叉路 and take a 5 minutes walk to reach your start point.
The Myoko Sanroku Line 妙高山麓線 operates from Apr 27, 2024 (Sat) to Nov 04, 2024 (Mon).
The bus starts from APA Resort Joetsu Myoko アパリゾート上越妙高, passes by Sekiyama Station 関山駅, and then basically acts as a shuttle bus around the highlands of Mount Myoko 妙高山, providing service between the Seki Onsen 関温泉 area, the Akakura 赤倉 area and Myoko Highlands 妙高高原.

Once again, we do not recommend starting your climb from Seki Onsen 関温泉 to embark on the Seki Trail 関コース, unless you are looking for a challenge.

Easiest way down is to take the Myoko Kogen Sky Cable 妙高高原スカイケーブル. However, saving the money and spending it on the onsen in Tsubame Onsen 燕温泉 is also an intriguing choice.
