How to go to Mount Takao 高尾山
Take the JR line to the JR Takao Station 高尾駅 and transfer to the Keio Line to reach Takaosanguchi Station 高尾山口駅. From there, you can start your ascend of Mount Takao 高尾山 after a short walk from the station.
Hiking Trails to Mount Takao 高尾山
There are 3 main trails we would recommend to hike up Mount Takao 高尾山. These trails avoid the option of taking the chair lifts (Takao Eco Lift 高尾エコーリフト) or the Takao Cable Car 高尾登山電鉄
My all time favorite route is to take the Takao Eco Lift 高尾エコーリフト or Takao Cable Car 高尾登山電鉄 to ascend Mount Takao 高尾山, and then take an approximately 12km ridge line hike to Mount Jinba 陣馬山 through Mount Kagenobu 景信山.
The Takao Jinba Trail 高尾陣馬コース takes away the hard part, the climb, and keeps only the good part, the ridge line trekking.

Trails 2 and 5 from Takao Trail 高尾コース are missing as they are officially marked trails that do not start from the trailhead. They are loops at the top and the middle of the mountain.
Getting to Mount Takao 高尾山 is pretty straightforward. You will need first get to the Takao Station 高尾駅 and transfer to the Keio Line to reach Takaosanguchi Station 高尾山口駅.
These train stations are very accessible local train stations, so you would not have problems for the arrival.
Leaving Mount Takao 高尾山 via Takaosanguchi Station 高尾山口駅 will require a transfer at Takao Station 高尾駅 to various other stations. Really straightforward.
However, if you plan to take my recommendation and ascend the Takao Jinba Trail 高尾陣馬コース, there are 2 ways you can get back from the side of Mount Jinba 陣馬山, depending on which route you are descend from, namely Jinbakogenshita Bus Stop 陣馬高原下 or Wada Bus Stop (Sagamihara City) 相模原市和田バス停.
